1 May 2014
Air quality inquiry Environmental Audit Committee (Select) Not accepting submissions The Committee followed up on its 2011 report on Air Quality. Since then further scientific evidence emerged on the link between air quality and health. The European Commission has started proceedings against the UK for failure to meet pollution limits on Nitrogen Oxides. The Committee also looked at progress on recommendations made in 2011 and also examined the role that might be played by new environmental technologies, and the scope for wider transport policies — for example on public transport and cycling and walking — to cut air pollution. Sustainable Food Environmental Audit Committee (Select) Not accepting submissions The Environmental Audit Committee, chaired by Joan Walley MP, has launched a wide ranging inquiry into the environmental and social consequences of the way the food we eat in the UK is produced, distributed, marketed and sold. The Committee wishes to examine how Government policy can be used to promote more sustainable practices in the UK food industry and more sustainable behaviours from the public. As part of this, the Committee will examine the Coalition Government’s proposals to develop new food policies. |

Sustainable Development in the Localism Bill Environmental Audit Committee (Select) Not accepting submissions The Environmental Audit Committee held a one-off evidence session on 16 February 2011 on the Government’s intention to introduce a ‘presumption in favour of sustainable development’. This was part of the Coalition-Government’s proposal to reform the planning system but this is not included in the Bill. Instead the Government has announced that the ‘presumption in favour of sustainable development’ will be included in a new overarching Government planning policy document, the National Planning Policy Framework, which will not be subject to Parliamentary debate. A report was then published by the Committee on 21 March 2011. In response, on 28 March 2011, a letter was sent to the Chair of the Committee, Joan Walley MP, by the Rt Hon Greg Clark MP, Minister for Decentralisation, Department for Communities and Local Government.
