Asylum: Legal Opinion
Asked by: Richard Burgon (Labour - Leeds East) Thursday 20th April 2023 Question to the Ministry of Justice: To ask the Secretary of State for Justice, what recent assessment he has made of the adequacy of legal advice available to people making an asylum claim. Answered by Mike Freer The Government is committed to ensuring that those seeking asylum in this country have access to publicly funded legal advice and representation. Access to legal aid is a key part of a fair immigration system, which is why we are spending around £8m expanding access to legal aid, helping victims of modern slavery, individuals prioritised for removal and individuals appealing an age assessment decision. The Legal Aid Agency keeps market capacity and the provision of services under constant review and takes immediate action when gaps appear, working with providers to ensure provision nationally. |

3 Apr 2023, 10:43 a.m. Teachers in England have rejected the Government's pay offer, with 98% against! No wonder. The Tories' offer meant two more years of real-terms pay cuts. The Government needs to listen, get back to the negotiating table and make an offer that can tackle the crisis in education. https://t.co/gMagT08gMi Link to Original Tweet |

As a trade union lawyer I saw the devastating impact our restricted workers’ rights has on people's everyday lives. We must defeat the Tories' attempt to drive these back even further. https://t.co/x3ooRX3Lzx Link to Original Tweet |
