Extend Bereavement Support Payments (BSP) for widowed parents - Final Signatures: 11,789

Sadly many people, myself included, find themselves unexpectedly widowed at a young age, often with children. The loss of an income and increased need for childcare lead to huge financial strain. We believe parents of children under school age or in education should receive the BSP for ten years.

Bereavement Support Payment helps with the immediate costs of bereavement. Other parts of the welfare system, such as Universal Credit, can provide longer-term financial assistance for those in need.

Do not stop transgender people from receiving care in mainstream hospital wards - 13,950 Signatures
(Estimated Final Signatures: 19,656 - 42 added in the past 24hrs)

The previous government proposed changes to the NHS constitution which would mean transgender hospital patients in England may not be treated in female- and male-only wards. We believe that this segregation is discriminatory, dangerous, and violates the Equality Act 2010 and it must not go ahead.

The Government responsed to this petition on 11th February 2025 (View Full Response)
Following the General Election last year, the Government is considering next steps for the 10-year review of the NHS Constitution. An update to Parliament will be made in due course.

Reduce the VAT on Hospitality businesses to 10% - Final Signatures: 18,374

Reduce the VAT on Hospitality to 10% from the current rate of 20% to allow Hospitality to survive the storm - or risk losing a large proportion of the industry to it.

The current tax system is disproportional and should be changed alongside changes in tax on supermarkets and online sales.

The Government responsed to this petition on 3rd April 2023 (View Full Response)
The VAT relief for the hospitality sector was a temporary measure designed to support the viability of sectors that had been severely affected by COVID-19. There are no plans to reintroduce it.

Do not permit any Council Tax increase of more than 5% without a referendum - Final Signatures: 17,690

No local authority should be able to increase Council Tax by more than 5% without a referendum. The Government should instead renegotiate its settlements with local authorities in England to find a way to resolve the exceptional financial difficulties that many councils find themselves in.

The Government takes annual decisions on council tax referendum thresholds. The Government set higher thresholds for three councils which are in financial difficulty and asked for this flexibility.
